Journal PaperApplied Acoustics , Volume 175 , 2021 April , {Pages 107756 }

Abstract

In precision livestock farming, studies show that bird sound can be employed as a biomarker of health condition. One of the most important steps for this purpose is to study the feasibility of using acoustic features as criteria for disease diagnosis. In this research five acoustic features of bird calls were evaluated for determination of bird health condition. Signals were collected from broilers grown in three groups: control, challenged with Bronchitis, and challenged with Newcastle disease. Results of data analysis showed that, among the 5 acoustic features studied, wavelet entropy (WET) had the best performance and was able to detect Bronchitis on the third day after inoculation with 83% accuracy while the type II error in this test (

Abstract

The amount of active compounds of medicinal plants (e.g. essential oil) varies in different plant parts. Thus, it is important to harvest those parts containing the highest levels of active compounds. In the present study the effect of harvest height on quantity and quality of Hyssopus officinalis was investigated based on a randomized complete block design with three replications. Treatments included four harvest heights including 15, 25, 35, and 45 cm (in basipetal order) and the residual stalks. After measuring the essential oil, the component values analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Regarding essential oil content (% v/w), yield and dry matter of different heights, the 15 cm height had the highest amount of essential oil (1.02?0.01%) and the lo

Journal PaperComputers and Electronics in Agriculture , Volume 168 , 2020 January 1, {Pages 105100 }

Abstract

Poultry is one of the most strategic source of human foods. There have been seen some hopeful signs of bioacoustics application to monitor the health condition of this vital food source. One of the obstacles is that the bird’s call is combined with some unvoiced sounds and extracting the calls is not easy, especially when the bird is sick. This research is a report on successful application?of some of the features involved in extracting healthy and non-healthy birds’ calls from their sound signals. One hundred and twenty birds from two genotypes – Ross and Cobb – were placed in two groups, a control and those challenged with respiratory diseases. They were reared and their sound was recorded daily. The vocal phrases of the recorded

Journal PaperBiological trace element research , 2020 May 11, {Pages }

Abstract

To investigate the effect of harvest height on the amassed elements and ash content of Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.), an experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Treatments included four harvest heights, ie, 15, 25, 35, and 45 cm (from the tip of the plant) and the residual stalks. The dependent variables were the amassed content of elements N, K, P, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, and Pb in different heights of the plant and the associated ash content (total ash (TA), acid-insoluble ash (AA), and water-insoluble ash (WA)). The results showed that by moving from the upper shoots toward the ground, the amassed content of Mg, Ca, Cu, Zn, and Pb increased by 22.67%, 43.74%, 12.87%, 39.02%, and 85.04%, respecti

Journal PaperNursing & Health Sciences , 2020 January 13, {Pages }

Abstract

Heart failure may bring about positive outcomes, which have not been adequately addressed in the literature. Therefore, this qualitative study sought to scrutinize the experiences of patients and the perceived positive effects of heart failure. The opinions of 19 patients with heart failure in Mashhad city (Iran) were collected via semistructured interviews from December 2017 to November 2018. After analyzing the data, six themes were identified by framework analysis: healthy lifestyle, effective interactions, appreciation of life, spirituality, reappraisal of life and priorities, and endurance. Such positive effects may lead to empowerment and better coping of patients with the disease. Therefore, nurses should consider the patients' perc

Abstract

Greenhouse is an environment where variables such as: climate, nutritional and biological conditions can be controlled. Therefore, the greenhouse allows horticultural crops to grow in the off-season and also affect plant growth to achieve optimal conditions for different stages of crop growth (Janoudi., 1993). The purpose of a greenhouse construction is to achieve the maximum amount of a product with the highest quality and minimum cost. Multiple factors and relationships inside the greenhouse have made it a complex system in which energy, mass transfer and genetic factors. Greenhouse production is affected by various variables, such as changes in environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and plant photosynthesis), pla

Journal PaperNeural Computing and Applications , 2020 November 20, {Pages 17-Jan }

Abstract

Timing belt rupture, which can develop quickly and cause severe harm to various engine components, usually occurs unexpectedly and without prior warning signs. Due to the rapid occurrence of timing belt rupture, fault diagnosis strategies are not indeed efficient. In this paper, a vibration-based intelligent method has been proposed to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of the timing belt using data mining techniques and multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLP-NN). To achieve this goal, two categories of experimental tests were designed and carried out on the timing belt, namely, fault thresholding (FT) and accelerated life (AL) tests. FT test was performed by comparing the defect-free belt vibration signals with those of a faulty b

Journal PaperIranian Journal of Biosystems Engineering , 2020 August 24, {Pages }

Abstract

Utilizing the latest available technologies is essential for food preservation and processing. Consumers increasingly prefer products that have undergone the least change during processing and storage. Among them, pulsed electric field (PEF) is one of the non-thermal methods of food processing and storage. In this study, a Pulsed Electric Field system was designed, fabricated and then evaluated. For this purpose, a Schmidt-Trigger-based pulse generating system were designed and tested using a gate driver with DC output. The input parameters for the tests included: voltage, number and frequency of pulses as well as pulse width. Results of the evaluation were reported in two parts. The Response-Surface method and Box-Bhenken scheme were used

Design and development of an automatic precision cutting system for herb stems

Mohammad Hosseinpour-Zarnaq, Saeid Minaei, Alireza Mahdavian, Mohammad Hadi Khoshtaghaza
Journal PaperIranian Journal of Biosystems Engineering , 2020 August 22, {Pages }

Abstract

Herb stems and leaves must be sheared and separated before any processing and post harvest operations. This is non-mechanized since parts of the stem having fewer leaves are cut manually. This research is focused on the design and development of an automated machine for precise cutting of harvested herb stems. The system detects plant's leafy area from the leafless stem section by using machine vision. For this purpose, herb stems are placed in clamps fixed on a conveyor belt. A digital camera takes images of the passing samples. Image processing is performed to determine the proper cutting position on the stem. The shearing system is then vertically moved to the determined cutting position to make a precision cut. The designed system cuts

Abstract

Study on biometric parameters of trout species in the traditional method (based on human and non-automatic factors) are low-efficient due to serious problems such as disease transmission, stress-induced death, inaccuracy, & time-consuming. To overcome the problems of traditional method, an image-based vision system, including imaging and lighting chambers, was developed in this research. The fish biometric parameters were measured using fish movement videography during passage from the dark chamber. Then the selected images from the video were processed. The length, surface area, weight, amount of food consumed, & growth rate of trout were measured under fully controlled conditions and used as comparison criteria (control). Six mathematical
