Mining engineering is the science and technology of designing, planning and optimizing mineral exploitation processes. The extraction of minerals has a history as old as the history of human civilization and throughout history has been the driving force behind the creation and development of human knowledge and technology. Today, along with the fourth industrial revolution, the mining industry has developed quantitatively and qualitatively and has been equipped with digital and smart technologies more than ever.
The Division of Mineral exploitation of Tarbiat Modares University has been established with the aim of creating a comprehensive educational and research center for postgraduate studies. This division includes two fields; mine exploitation and mining economics and management. For the first time in Iran, the masters degree in mining economics and management was launched in this university. The admission of students in the masters fields of the mine exploitation and mining economics and management started in 1999 and 2005, respectively. With more than two decades of history, the division is ranked 44th in the 2023 Shanghai rankings.
The main research activities of the division include design and planning, mining economics, blasting operations, transportation operations, mechanized drilling, fleet management, intelligentization of mines and productivity management in mines.
Graduates of this division, in addition to open pit and underground mines and mining industries, are being employed in the construction of tunnels and underground spaces as well as dams.
