The electric power system, as the largest physical system made by humankind, has been drastically developed in recent years. Its scope is extended to the knowledge of communication networks, economics and law, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. Moreover, it has expanded to the technological innovations in the field of energy conversion. The increase in the diversity of decision-makers with heterogeneous goals, the intelligence enhancement of these networks, and the increasing importance of the reliability and quality of electricity along with its transformation into a competitive commodity, have caused major changes in the planning, control and operation of power systems. On the other hand, the finite energy sources and pollution and environmental issues, have led to the development of new concepts such as quality and price sensitive demands, distributed generations, and active distribution networks. In addition, the development of measurement and communication infrastructures in order to make the network more observable and controllable and increasing the dependence of humans on this vital infrastructure has caused new concerns about cyber security. On the other hand, the ever-increasing advancement of semiconductor elements and electronic knowledge has led to the emergence of a broad research field called power electronics. Important developments in the field of electric vehicles, reducing the volume of power electronic devices, and expanding the knowledge and technology of flexible transmission systems are due to the results of global research in this field.
Power group, as one of the oldest groups of the faculty and university, currently has 9 faculty members who are active in different areas of power engineering, i.e. two main fields of power systems and power electronics. This group has 8 research laboratories and the Iranian Power System Engineering Research Center (IPSERC) was also established with the efforts of this groups faculty members. From the research achievements perspective, the power group is considered to be one of the most prestigious groups at the university level, and its up-to-date, efficient and joyful educational and research environment is the result of the cooperation and empathy of group members, students and distinguished experts who strive to develop new applicable concepts for the electricity industry of the country in accordance with their social responsibilities.
In summary, the research interests of the power group faculty members are smart grids, energy management, renewable energies, power system reliability, electricity market, energy economy and regulation, planning and operation of transmission and distribution grids, control and dynamics of power system, cyber-physical security, modern converters, power electronics, industrial electronics and drives, application of electronics in power systems, and so on.
