   Tehran University in 1974, and Ph.D. in Agronomy Mohammad  Jafar Malakouti, distinguished Professor at  Tarbiat Modares University, was born in Marand in 1947. He received B.Sc. in Soil Sciences from Shahid Chamran University, Ahwaz, in 1970, M.Sc. in Soil Sciences with honors from Nebraska University in 1977. He taught atZanjanCollege of Agriculture from 1978 to 1983. Since 1984 he has been teaching and doing research at Tarbiat Modares University. He was chosen as the country’s distinguished Professor in 1996 and has served as the Director General of the Soil and Water Research Institute of Iran and Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture since 1996 with the responsibility on production and balanced application of fertilizers in the country. In 1997, he was awarded the Distinctive Service Award-3rd Order by Iran’s President for professional achievements and productivity in balanced fertilization and optimization of P-fertilizers use. He has promoted application of K-fertilizers and micronutrients, especially zinc sulfate, in crop production to the benefit of improved dietary and health standards. Subsequently, he was awarded the Razi Medical Festival’s First Prize for enhancement of human health (reducing PA/Zn molar ratio in wheat grain and providing a scientific process for whole-wheat bread production). In 2002, he was nominated by the Farmers' House Secretary General and received the Commemorative Insignia for promoting balanced application of fertilizers and for demonstrating their roles in improving the yield and quality of agricultural products. 

   In 2003 and 2004, he was invited by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for preparing and submitting two reports on the role of zinc in improving crop yields and enhancing human health and fertilizer use by crops in Iran. In 2004 he was also honored with an award by the 18th International Kharazmi Festival for proving the existence of micronutrient deficiencies, especially zinc, in soils, agricultural products, and humans. In 2005 he also won Annual SOPIB prize for implementing dramatic change in the country’sNPK +S + Micronutrients ratio towards sustainable agriculture from the Board Directors of TFI in Toronto, Canada. He was the first Iranian scientist to win TWAS Prize in agricultural sciences from the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2005. In 2007 he was also honored with an award by the Iranian Soil Sciences Society for in 2008. He was also selected as a Prominent Personality in Agricultural Sciences (Soil Sciences) by the 7th Commemoration of the Iranian Biannual Panel of Experts, and in 2010 he was selected as a distinguished Scientist by the Committee of the Third International Innovation and Economic Justice. Furthermore, in 2012, with respect to having the highest number of published papers in Persian, he was selected as the country's most accomplished scientist by the renowned Islamic World Science Citation Center.

   He has served as the senior advisor to more than 130 M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses anddissertations in agricultural sciences, especially in soil fertility and plant nutrition. Finally, in conjunction with his professors, colleagues and graduate students, he can rightly lay claim to having prepared, published and presented around 1,520 scientific articles including  54 books, 449 scientific papers in English and in Persian, 553 papers in National and International scientific-professional congregations and collection of 464 extensional publications,15 patents and 33 final reports from completed projects.

   Prof. Mohammad J. Malakouti had the honor to retire in July 2011, while seizing the highest scientific score among all faculty members of the university. Subsequently, with the coming of the 11th Administration, from January 2015, he was reinstated as full-time Professor at Soil Science Department, Agriculture Faculty, Tarbiat Modares University.
