Theoretical physics has given recent impetus to several branches of Pure Mathematics, including Non-commutative Ring Theory, previously thought of as one of the more abstract branches of the subject. Many fascinating new non-commutative rings originating from physics have been a rewarding source of research problems for Dr. Moussavi and his research students.

 

 

Non-commutative rings arise most naturally as rings of linear transformations of vector spaces. A favourite example is the Weyl algebra which is built from two linear transformations ∂ (differentiation) and x (multiplication by x) of the vector space of polynomials in x over the complex numbers. The resulting ring looks like a polynomial ring in two variables x and ∂ but ∂x=x∂+1 so we get a non-commutative or skew polynomial ring. Research students of Dr. Moussavi are likely to work on the general theory or particular examples (or both) of such skew polynomial rings.
