History: Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) was founded in 1982. The main goal of this university was to give this opportunity to academic staffs to enhance their scientific and research skills and to get promotion. Besides, this post-graduate university was first to initiate Post-Graduate programs in various disciplines to provide faculty members required by other universities in the country. Since then, a considerable number of devoted and enthusiastic young scientists were educated at TMU who are now acting as faculty members in the universities all over the country.
The activity of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of TMU was officially started in 1983 after admitting 65 students for the established master (MSc) programs in Basic Medical Sciences. Later in 1988 the first batch of Doctorate (PhD) students consisting of 26 devoted and enthusiastic scholars were selected to do their PhD at the departments of Biostatistics, Medical Parasitology, Anatomy, Medical Bacteriology, and Clinical Biochemistry.
After 25 years of service, the number of alumni of the faculty of Medical Sciences is about 2360 (~2000 MSc and 360 PhD). Currently there are 80 full-time faculty members of whom 20 are full-professor engaged in teaching and research in 18 departments. To keep the standards and the quality of the programs, the number of students admitted every year to different departments is limited to ~150. At present altogether, ~500 students are working for their courses and thesis. In addition to the central facilities such as animal house, library, and computer center, there are about 70 well-equipped research laboratories, which give service to the students successfully passed their courses.
Based on the statistics, the productivity of the faculty of Medical Sciences is encouraging. For instance, the number of research articles published in referred journals during the academic year 2006-2007 (12 months) is 366, of which 230 papers have been indexed in international databases.
The educational departments have established a close collaboration with different hospitals and medical centers and universities in order to facilitate the practical courses and clinical sample collection for research activities.
Research priorities are listed below for those interested in collaboration:
1- Identification and characterization of stem cells from different sources.
2- Cancer research and carcinogenesis.
3- Production of Monoclonal antibodies and clinical application.
4- Health education systems and Models.
5- Neurophysiology and Molecular Neurobiology.
6- Identification and Management of environmental and occupational hazardous agents.
