Welcome to the Immunology Department Website.
Molecular Research into biological phenomena and research on the underlying causes of disease has shed light on many obscure areas of biological and medical sciences. Immunology in both its clinical and basic areas has made remarkable advances in the past three decades. The immunopathology of disease, the cellular basis of immune responses, the intracellular signaling pathways involved, the immunology of AIDs, cancer, autoimmune diseases have all paved way for exciting scientific developments in biology and medical sciences. Immunology has been the vanguard of basic medical research for a long time now and it seems that this science will maintain its pioneer position for a long time to come.
The Immunology Department began in 1983 with a graduate degree program at the MSc level. The faculty members promoted research and education in various fields of immunology with a vision for the future. Clinical research has been directed to meet the current medical challenges and national priorities.
We have revised and improved our teaching programs and research strategies for both PhD and MSc degree programs to include more recent advances and methodologies.
The Department hosted an International Immunology Congress in 2000 in which hundreds of papers and research works were presented to reflect the wealth of scientific research performed in the country and abroad.
Although our modest physical space has not changed much and we look forward to a significant improvement in the near future, we have been able to acquire instruments and facilities which have enabled our students to perform their laboratory work in the department. The molecular immunology lab supervised by Dr. Ebtekar, the infectious disease lab supervised by Dr. Zavaran, the immunobiology of dendritic cell lab supervised by Dr.Moazzeni, the immunohaematology lab supervised by myself and the tumor immunology lab supervised by ِِDr.Hassan as well as the cell culture room etc are currently engaged in active research. Our Department is also very active at the national level in cooperation with other Universities, Research Organizations and Scientific Societies. Whatever our achievements in basic and clinical science and in making it useful, I suspect we will be judged nationally on other criteria. When asked what one of his most important achievements was, Imam Khomeini said my students and young children who will grow to change our society. Our most important contribution will surely be the young graduates and post-graduates who go on to play roles in many aspects of scientific research, industry, government and teaching.

Dr. A.A - Pourfathollah,Head Department of Immunology
