Plant Biology includes the disciplines of cellular and molecular plant biology and the traditional areas of botany such as physiology, systematics, ecology, evolution, anatomy, and morphology.
Staff of Plant Biology department share an interest in the study of plants ranging from algae to higher plants. Their teaching and research activities focus primarily on three broad areas: plant molecular and cell biology, including plant physiology and biochemistry; plant genetics; and plant structural and developmental biology. In addition, the department of Plant Biology maintains an interest in the study of plant diversity and evolution on molecular basis.
Research in the department focuses on both pure and applied basic aspects of plant biology. Staff members in the department rely on approaches in molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry to identify and characterize plant genes and to investigate plant structure, function and development as well as interactions between plants and their environment.
Staff members serve as major advisers to graduate students in Plant Biology, Agriculture, Agronomy and other related sections in other faculties.
We provide all our students with a supportive and stimulating environment. Many of the outstanding publications from the department are based on work by its MS and phD students. There is a carefully monitored research supervision system, and a wealth of seminars and other research-oriented teaching. Someone who is graduated from our section can pursue rewarding careers in the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, energy or chemical industries food or seed companies, or being professional advisors for environmental protection and municipal green building policies .
