With the aim of treating bone infection, controlled drug-delivery system was designed at TMU

University researchers managed to provide a slow-release drug system using Nano-particles to treat bone infection.
Vahid Taghipour Sabzevar, graduate student of chemical engineering in bio-medicine, and executor of the project "Long-term controlled release of vancomycin from in situ formation of poly lactic-glycolic acid, loaded by chitosan nanoparticles”, stated: The advantages of these systems are biodegradability without requiring surgery.
According to Taghipour: The system designed in this study, polymeric nanoparticle system, used in order to reduce the initial release of the drug which results in a prolonged and controlled release of vancomycin; this system can be used for the treatment of chronic bone infection.
He added: “The loading of chitosan nano-particles (containing drugs) in the designed polymer system, compared to the free drug used in these systems; substantially reduced initial release and improved its release time.
