Biostatistics

History

The Department of Biostatistics was established in 1984 with the primary goal of admitting MSc applicants to educate and train proficient graduates. Since 1988, the department has also expanded its activities to include PhD students. A significant portion of the national researchers and faculty members are graduates of the Department of Biostatistics.

The Mission of the Department

The major aims of The Department of Biostatistics are to train well-educated and highly committed graduates who constantly pursue the latest methods of biological and medical data as well as carrying out the necessary research to expand the boundaries of this area. Accordingly, in line with leading and prominent universities of the world, they can lead the development of research in various fields of life sciences in the country. The movement for the production of science and the application of different methods of biostatistics in solving the problems of the country, in harmony with Iranian culture and its ideals, are among the missions of this group.

Department Members Accomplishments

The faculty members of the Department of Biostatistics are academically recognized experts in national and international academic circles and are members of editorial boards in many academic journals of the country. They have significant works including books, articles, conference speeches.

Research Areas of the Department

Various fields of biostatistics, including designing and analyzing various statistical models and data., The research areas of the Department of Biostatistics include:

  • Linear models and generalized linear models (GLM) that have useful benefits in determining the influencing factors in various diseases.
  • Clinical trial, which is a type of medical study performed in human populations. A significant application of clinical trials is to study the effects of drugs and new therapies.
  • Survival analysis of patients and the influencing factors
  • Bioinformatics, a broad interdisciplinary field that studies, develops and implements computational tools and bioinformatics methods for analyzing collected data.
  • Computational statistics, a novel and growing branch of statistics, is applied to carry out statistical algorithms for statistical deductions.
  • Nonparametric statistics is a set of statistical methods in which the data is not required to fit a normal distribution and the least assumptions in data analysis is considered in calculations. This method is especially useful when there are low-volume data in the studied groups.
  • Bayesian inference is a method of statistical inference in which, in addition to the information collected from the data, the researchers information and knowledge about the parameters is also used as the prior probability distribution in statistical inference. The advantage of this set of methods is that their capabilities help researchers solve complex statistical problems and instances with a small sample size.
